Lecture Conditions

The challenges presented by the fast urbanization process happening in China are unprecedented. It is forecasted that by 2030/2035, 70% of the Chinese population  will live in urban conditions (from today’s 50%), with the consequent creation of new urban bodies and migrations from rural territories to the existing and new cities and other urban territories. Therefore, the next decades are crucial for finding a new sustainable balance within cities, rural and natural eco-systems. Architecture and urban planning can play a substantial role in this search.

Can the mutable conditions of today’s China become the basis for radical development of architecture and urban planning disciplines?

Anti-tectonics Pavilion

The program “Anti-tectonics” for Beijing Design Week 2013 has been hosted at the “Anti-tectonics Pavilion”, a structure wrapped by an iconic curtain that staged talks, discussions, and other events during the entire length of the Beijing Design Week 2013.

Designed by Giannantonio Bongiorno, Momo Andrea Destro and Eugenia Murialdo, the pavilion has been conceived as a simple structure with a roof and 2 main walls. It included a lounge bar, an exhibition area, and a conference room for a total amount of 150m 2. The 50 meters long curtain has been designed as a temporary envelope, able to open the entire pavilion to the Power Square of the 751 design fair grounds, avoiding divisions between inside and outside when open and creating a soft and iconic barrier when closed.
